Sir Benet Garrard by Samuel Collins,
signed & dated 1760.

Sir Benet Garrard (d. 1767) was the 6th and last Baronet of Lamar. Garrard was a major land owner in the city of Bath, where, in 1760, Samuel Collins was the leading miniaturist. Garrard, whose home was Lamar Park in Sandridge, Wheathampstead, died unmarried.

Set in the original gold pendant frame, the reverse with an old collection label identifying the sitter. The miniature is signed on the obverse, lower right S. C./ 1760. An unusual touch - the embroidery on Sir Benet's coat is painted in gold and silver leaf.

1 3/8 inches high.

Samuel Collins (1735 -1768), of Bristol was trained as a lawyer before setting up his studio in Bath. By 1760, he was the leading miniaturist in Bath, but in 1762, debts forced a move to Dublin, leaving his practice to his student, Ozias Humphry. Collins was quickly successful in Dublin, but died in 1768 at the early age of thirty three. There are two examples of Collins' fine work in the Draper Collection at Kenwood.
