Chamberlain Hinchliff (1787-1856) of London, married Sarah Parish, daughter of Sir Woodbine Parish, His Majesty's Commissioner of Excise, in 1824. They had three sons, including Thomas Woodbine Hinchliff, legendary mountain climber and president of the Alpine Club. Hinchliff, a prosperous landowner and builder, was an enthusiastic patron of poets.

Set in a carved giltwood frame with original sanded brass mat. The reverse with sitter's name and inscription "Painted by/ Kenneth M Leay/ Edinburgh/ Decr 1823".
4 ½ inches (11.5 cm) high.
Kenneth Macleay, R.S.A. (1802-1878), who was patronized by Queen Victoria, was a founder member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He exhibited at the R.S.A. and the R.A. Examples of Macleay's works are in the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
